Sponsored and facilitated by the Mountain Heritage Center at WCU, this program explores the heritage of southern Appalachia from Native American origins through the arrival of the railroad by engaging participants in historic crafts, artifact investigation, local stories and legends, and field trips to farms and historic sites to learn about the people who lived in these mountains 100 to 1,000 years ago

Mages in the Mountains is a day camp for rising 3rd–5th graders, held August 3–7, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Cullowhee Academy of the Mystic Arts (Western Carolina University). This immersive experience blends STEM, creative arts, and outdoor exploration through a magical, wizardry-inspired curriculum where campers are sorted into houses, design magical creatures, compete in challenges for the House Cup, and participate in activities like potions experiments, astronomy, Appalachian history, and themed games. The cost is $200, lunch is provided daily at WCU’s Catamount Café, and registration requires a Family Account and completion of a Day Camp Permission Form.

Summer Camps

Our summer camps at WCU allow students to socialize and build friendships, learn about new topics, and develop skills while having fun and enjoying time on WCU’s campus! We have excellent faculty and staff from WCU and community partners who specialize in areas and have designed camps for our children and teens that contain customized curriculum students will be interested in.  Camp leaders have a passion for sharing their knowledge and hope to grow students’ interest in learning outside of the traditional classroom settings of school.
