UNC Mandatory Requirements

Students attending WCU are required to show proof of valid medical insurance coverage or must enroll in the mandatory UNC System health plan.

Requirements are:

• enrolled in a degree-seeking program, AND
• enrollment in a minimum of 6 on-campus credit hours, AND 
• eligible to pay the campus student health fee

Students that are enrolled in distance education programs are not eligible for enrollment in the student health plan because they do not meet these requirements.

Each student that meets these requirements must take action regarding insurance coverage. If you do not take action regarding waiver or enrollment, you will be automatically enrolled in the UNC system health plan after the waiver process has ended. Students that wait for the automatic enrollment process will have insurance coverage effective on August 1^st (for Fall enrollees) and January 1^st (for Spring enrollees) BUT may not receive an insurance card until mid-semester. Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC will offer the Student Blue product again this year as the plan for the UNC System.

Student Blue Insurance

All students that meet the mandatory health insurance requirements AND are NOT at WCU on a J1 Visa are eligible for enrollment in the Student Blue plan administered by BCBS of North Carolina.   The Student Blue plan does not satisfy the J1 Visa requirements for health insurance.

Coverage dates are August 1^st – December 31^st for fall semester coverage and January 1^st – July 31^st for spring/summer coverage.

Students that wait for the automatic enrollment process will have insurance coverage that becomes effective on the first date of coverage specific to the semester BUT the student will not receive an insurance card until early October after the waiver reconciliation and appeals period is completed.   In order to receive the insurance card as soon as possible, the student should visit the Student Blue portal and choose to enroll in the plan.

Global Solutions Insurance

Any student meeting the mandatory health insurance requirements AND attending WCU on a J1 Visa are eligible for enrollment in Global Solutions Insurance, a plan specifically for International Students administered by BCBS of North Carolina.

Coverage dates are August 1^st – December 31^st for fall semester, January 1^st – May 31^st for spring semester and June 1^st – July 31^st for summer coverage.

Students that wait for the automatic enrollment process will have insurance that becomes effective on the first date of coverage specific to that semester or period, BUT the student may not receive the insurance card until early October after the waiver reconciliation and appeals period is completed.

Students that enroll in the Global Solutions plan MUST enter the enrollment information in the Waiver Portal for waiver approval.
