Master of Accountancy
What You’ll Learn
The Master of Accountancy Program builds on your existing accounting education with
a 30-semester hour program focusing on subjects such as accounting theory, auditing
standards, concepts of taxation, tax research, accounting information systems and
business law. Students will also receive the 150-hours of experience necessary to
satisfy AICPA and state board requirements for CPA licensure. Full-time students can
complete the program in 12 months while part-time students can finish in 18 months.
Where You’ll Go
WCU is proud to have its Master of Accountancy Program alumni working for internationally,
regionally and locally prestigious employers such as PricewaterhouseCoopers, Bank
of America, Volvo, Mission Hospitals, Gould Killian and Biltmore Company. The program
provides ample opportunities for networking at various events featuring representatives
from employers from across Western North Carolina. The Bureau of Labor Statistics
states the average salary for accountants is $81,680 and predicts the job field will
grow by 5% by 2034.
The Master of Accountancy (MAcc) program is offered fully online and is designed to
provide students with the necessary foundation for successful careers in public accounting,
industry, government, and not-for-profit institutions. It prepares students to meet
the AICPA and state board 150-hour requirement for licensure as a Certified Public
Accountant (CPA).
To apply, you'll need an undergraduate degree, supporting documents, and qualifying
test scores—or a waiver if you meet special requirements.
Full-time students can finish in 12 months; part-time options extend to 20 months.
Flexible completion up to 6 years. Includes 18 hours of core accounting courses and
12 hours of electives.
WCU offers programs that may lead to professional licensure or certification. Requirements
for licensure vary by state, so students must review their program and check state-specific
rules before enrolling to ensure eligibility in their intended state of work.
